RIVER RIDGE — John Curtis scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday to break a 2-2 tie on its way to a 4-2 District 10-2A victory at home over Riverside.

The win pushed Curtis to a perfect 20-0 mark this season and wrapped up the district championship for the Patriots, who finished district play undefeated. A Rebels victory would have earned Riverside a split district championship.

“I’m not happy with a loss, but I’m happy to see more of a competitive edge against this team than we showed previously,” said Riverside coach Kristy Hebert, referring to the Rebels’ 9-1 loss to Curtis last month in Reserve. “Our confidence level was a lot different this time and it was a much better game for us … Hopefully if we meet them again down the line, we’ll clean up the mistakes and come out ahead.”

Curtis scored a run in each of the second and fifth innings before Riverside (21-7, 5-2) tied the game in the sixth on Megan Stein’s two-RBI triple.

But with two outs, Curtis started a rally and four consecutive batters reached base to push two runs across.

Destin Vicknair took the loss for RA, despite giving up no earned runs. She struck out two, allowed four hits and walked eight in a complete game effort.

But four errors contributed to all four Curtis runs.

“I think we’re two similar teams,” said Hebert. “The difference this time really came down to the errors.”

Stein finished 2-for-2 at the plate.

 

RIVERSIDE 4, BELLE CHASSE 0 — Saturday saw Riverside come away with an impressive non-district win as it downed host Belle Chasse (21-7).

Vicknair tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out eight to earn the win.

Taylor Terrio went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Riverside. Hailey Tassin was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Toni Hebert went 2-for-4.

Riverside scored twice in the third inning and added two more runs in the seventh.

“It was an excellent performance for us,” said coach Hebert. “Defensively we played well and we executed at the plate. It was a great win on the road against a good team.”

The Rebels were slated to face Vandebilt Catholic on the road Tuesday. Today, RA wraps up its regular season with a home game against Hahnville at 3:30 p.m.
