Easter is not only for the candy

As a child with a sweet tooth looking forward to Easter, I could hardly wait to dig into all those different candies. My favorites were Pecan eggs, Coconut Cream, Heavenly Hash, Gold Brick and milk chocolate rabbits. My taste buds haven’t changed as I’ve gotten older.

I can remember when my children were young, I always suggested that Jeanne buy all of my favorite candies. The problem with that was when the Easter weekend rolled around, I had eaten most of the candies and Jeanne had to rush around replenishing our Easter supply.

One year, realizing I had a problem disciplining my desire for sweets, I told Jeanne that I didn’t want any Easter candy in the house until the Saturday before Easter. Well, the Wednesday before Easter, she said, “Harold, all the good Easter candies will be gone if I wait until Saturday to buy them!” (Be reminded that I’m a 40-year-old supposedly mature man at the time.) I agreed that she should buy them Wednesday with the condition that all would be hidden.

That night I went to sleep with my only intention of having a good night’s sleep. Well, about 2 a.m., I woke up thinking about the candy. I got up and looked all over the house, in the closets, under the beds and every possible hiding place and couldn’t find the candy. I woke Jeanne up and softly said, “Where’s the eggs?” “I’m not going to tell you,” she answered, quite amazed that I woke her up. “Listen, Jeanne!” I said, not so softly, “I don’t want to play games at 2 o’clock in the morning. Where are the eggs?”  She gave in. I found the candy and satisfied my craving.

My thoughts during the coming Holy Week should only be on what Jesus did at the Cross that I might be saved and one day enjoy eternity with Him and our Father in Hea-ven.

My undisciplined eating habits haven’t changed much, but my focus on Easter Sunday has. Today, I realize that Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
