Recently, over 700 students and faculty members of Luling Elementary welcomed the Mardi Gras Indians. These special guests performed for the students and taught them about their history and purpose. Students also learned about traditions and culture of the Mardi Gras Indians including how they design and make their own costumes. The students learned that they typically do not march in parades; they just parade through the streets of their neighborhoods on Mardi Gras Day. Some of the chants are passed down from generation to generation to continue the traditions that make these performers unique to New Orleans.

During the two performances, students were entertained by the pounding drum beats and colorful chants that are synonymous with the Mardi Gras Indians. It was an experience the students enjoyed, especially those who had the opportunity to play the drum and dance with the performers.
