LAPLACE – This year Black History Month had one extra day, and Emily C. Watkins took full advantage of the additional time, holding its Black History program, “Footprints in History,” on Feb. 29.

An auditorium filled with students, teachers and parents were treated to an entertaining and inspiring program, no matter one’s race.

After introductions and a modern dance performance from Kori Gauff, a group of kindergarteners dressed in their Sunday best performed a sign-language version of the song “The World’s Greatest.”

Next, several students recited inspirational quotes to their classmates before a stomp performance had the crowd bobbing in their seats and cheering for more.

Other highlights included a few songs from local singing prodigy Rance Scott Jr., an African dance performance and the recitation of poetry from the likes of Maya Angelou and other revered African-American poets.

In closing, Principal Toni Robinet said, “This was a very special program. Many people before us lost their lives for us to be able to enjoy the freedoms we have. Value what you are given, and do your best to make these people proud.”
