For the past 10 years, Get High on Life has sponsored a community prayer breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Home in Lutcher. This year’s breakfast was held last Saturday morning in preparation for the Lenten Season leading to the Resurrection of Jesus.

The weather Saturday was awful, with lots of rain and more predicted before, during and after the 8 a.m. program. The news media had

special hourly weather reports. People looking forward to the Mardi Gras entertainment in New Orleans feared it would rain on their parade. I, too, was concerned about the weather, but for a different reason.

As I drove to Lutcher, I feared people would use that as an excuse not to attend. I was the first to arrive at 7:30 a.m., with only the Kaycee’s doing what they do best, unselfishly being public servants for any good cause.

People slowly drifted in, and at 8 a.m. we had over 100 people sitting, waiting to enjoy the program and a good meal.

Abby Bergeron of LaPlace, a student at the Baptist Seminary in New Orleans, and her brother, Ben, invited Helga Tone from Romania, a music major at the seminary, and her brother, Benjamin, a theological student.

As I listened to Helga on the violin and Benjamin on the guitar accompanied by Abby who played the flute and Ben with his trumpet, I was blessed, and their music touched the hearts of everyone. Abby and Ben are two of Emile and Anne’s 11 children.

The meeting opened with a prayer by Deacon Garland Roussel of St. Hubert Church. The presentation of the flag by the VFW Post 5852 was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Cmdr. Baron Bunch.

Ben Bergeron shared about his experience in the Get High on Life jail meetings held every Wednesday night. He then introduced Chairman Danny Louque, who shared about his role in Get High on Life, but more importantly, about his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He closed by singing, “I’ve got Jesus on the inside, and He’s working on the outside, bringing a change in my life. Oh, what a change – oh what a change in my life.”

Mrs. Lola Mahler of the Assisi Prayer Group from Vacherie said

Bless America,” ending a great program.

As I drove home, I didn’t know how many parades would be rained on, but I thank God that He reigned on our breakfast.
