Laughter is the medicine of the soul

In years past, the legendary football coach Duffy Daugherty of Michigan State was known as a colorful character. He is credited with saying a person needed only three bones to be successful in life. A wish bone to dream on, a back bone for strength and courage to get through the tough times and a funny bone to laugh at life along the way.

I say that’s pretty good advice. Everyone needs to dream of being successful. The Bible is very specific when it says without a vision, the people perish. A person may still be alive physically but dead spiritually, not really enjoying life but just existing.

In these times, not many people have the strength and courage to get through the trials of life. We have become a nation of wimps, preferring to give up at the slightest resistance. The Bible also gives us the solution to any difficult time. It says in Philippians 4:13 that you can do all things through Christ Who strengthens you.

Lastly, but most importantly, is the funny bone, which gives us the ability to laugh at ourselves during good times and bad times. We have all heard it said that laughter is the best medicine. I don’t think God minds if we overdose once in a while.

I think good advice for people who confess to being Christians is to be reminded the Bible says the joy of the Lord is our strength. With that said, a person is a weak witness without joy. One of the most tragic things in life is a joyless Christian.

An evangelist once said he was tired of hearing people say they had Jesus in their heart, but evidently they forgot to notify their face because they walked around like they had just sucked a lemon.

A truly cheerful face comes from a joyful heart, not from a lack of concern for life’s tragedies.
