I attended a 12-step program last week with a friend of mine. Years ago, I was first introduced to the program at this same location.

There were 60 people in attendance. The first person I met was a man named Harry (not his real name). He was sitting on a bench as you entered. He was on oxygen, seemed to be happy and was the type anyone would enjoy meeting.

The meeting lasted one hour and 15 minutes. Some people spoke about their success in the program and others about their struggles.

One of the last to speak was a well-spoken lady who had been set free from her addiction two years ago. She took up most of her time speaking about a spiritual experience. She continued to say she never experienced a “burning bush” or saw a bright light. She went on for 10 to 15 minutes, rambling about a spiritual experience that the program talks about and repeating a few times that she never saw a “burning bush.” She ended with, “I guess the only spiritual experience I had was being free of my addiction for two years, but I never did see a ‘burning bush.’”

The next speaker, which happened to be the last one, was Harry. He shared only a few words and then directed his comments to the lady. “If you want a ‘burning bush,’ go in the woods, find a bush, and set it on fire.”

That to me was the highlight of the meeting.

Getting back to a “burning bush,” God refers to one in Exodus, chapter 3, verses 2, 3, 4 and 5. It is described as an angel of the Lord appearing to Moses in a flame of fire from a bush. The bush burned with fire, but the bush was not consumed. God called to Moses from the bush and said, “Moses, Moses,” and Moses said, “Here I am.” Then God told him not to go near this place. He instructed him to take off his sandals for the place where he was standing was holy ground.

Many people are looking for a spiritual awakening – a “burning bush,” a bright light, something exciting to tell people and maybe impress them. The thing that impresses people the most is a changed life that only a personal relationship with Jesus will accomplish.
