RESERVE — St. Charles’ Logan Jacob and Austin Douroux each scored goals to lead the Comets’ boys soccer team to its third win in the last five games, 2-1 over rival Riverside.
The Comets got out to a 2-0 lead before Riverside’s David Gurley scored and pulled the Rebels within one in the second half. But SCC’s defense was able to hold on for the win.
Jacob gave credit to a teammate on his score.
“Albert Hane knocked the ball loose to get it to me, so I thank him for that,” said Jacob. “I just got lucky and got a goal out of it.”
He also said he felt like the Comets were finally starting to gel, echoing the words of SCC coach Paul Shenton this week.
“We feel like our guys are in the right spots now, like we know where the ball will be, where it’s going,” Jacob said. “We played with a lot of heart tonight.”
The win was the second for the Comets over Riverside this season, both victories coming by a goal.
Shenton said that both games against the Rebels carried a good deal of significance for his team. Riverside has never beaten St. Charles in boys soccer, and Shenton wanted his players to know how important it was to keep that the case.
“Even in our struggles, the thought I conveyed before these games was, if we only win two games, make them against Riverside,” said Shenton. “It’s your local rival, and those matches carry more meaning. Our players didn’t want to be the first (to lose).”
St. Charles will face Haynes at SCC at 6 p.m. Monday in an attempt to tie the Yellow Jackets for second in district and make a big stride for playoff position.
As for Riverside, the Rebels endured a rebuilding season, the SCC game the last of its campaign.
Senior C.J. Edler said that his team struggled with injuries but improved their play as the year went on, and noted that he felt the young players on the team flashed strong potential.
“We fought through a lot, but a lot of young players stepped up. There’s a lot of good talent on our team,” said Edler. “I thought we started meshing together well toward the end of the season.”
