Each year, the Louisiana Department of Education seeks to award one fifth- and eighth-grade student as Student of the Year for the state. The Student of the Year award guidelines require that the students have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a four-point scale to compete. Other award criteria are based on academic achievement, leadership experience, recognitions, service and community contributions, an interview and writing skills.
This year, Fifth Ward Elementary School announced Erriyel Cemelien, elementary Student of the Year and Kirione Watkins, middle/junior high school Student of the Year. Both students will represent the school in the upcoming parish awards competition.
