St. Charles fell in its opener to Covington Monday, but rebounded with a convincing win Tuesday over St. Helena Central.
The Comets outscored St. Helena 30-10 in the first half en route to a 50-20 road victory.
Heather Orillion led SCC with 11 points. Courtney Snyder scored 10. Kacie Braud added eight and Emily Picciola scored seven.
“We took advantage of some early turnovers,” said St. Charles coach Paul Waguespack. “We hit seven of our first eight shots, whereas Monday, we missed our first 10. So that was big for their confidence. You could see a different bounce in their step after that early success.”
SCC held St. Helena to just two points in the third quarter.
The Comets fell on Monday at Covington, 60-23, in a game where a slow start had SCC playing catch up from the outset. The Lions outscored SCC 17-2 in the first quarter.
Braud scored nine to lead SCC. Orillion added six.
“The girls played hard in both games. Monday, they never quit, and I was happy with that,” said Waguespack. “Covington is a good, established program. I thought if we had made a few easy baskets early … do we win? Probably not. But I think it would have helped. We did some good things, though.
Waguespack said that the schedule will be tough this season and he won’t guarantee success in terms of wins and losses, but that he believes his team will get stronger as the season goes on.
“I don’t know what our final record will be. We might be 1-27, nothing is guaranteed,” said Waguespack. “But I believe good things come to people who work hard. And if we continue to do that, then the same will be true and these girls will see the benefit of it.”
