LUTCHER — The Lutcher Bulldogs won for the 10th straight week on Friday night, downing the Benton Tigers, 48-6, at Lutcher in a bi-district Class 4A playoff game.
Benton kept things interesting early, staying within a score until Ruston Matherne’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Taylor with 3:50 left in the first half put the Bulldogs ahead 21-6.
Benton could not hold Lutcher (10-1) down forever, and in the second half the Bulldogs exploded. Lutcher scored just six points in the third quarter, on another Matherne pass to Taylor, but rolled up three fourth quarter scores, two of them coming on long plays of 69 (a Matherne pass to Dorian Semien) and 78 (a Taylor run) yards.
Each team topped 200 yards rushing, with Lutcher gaining 262 to Benton’s 217. But the Tigers had no answer for Lutcher’s high-octane passing attack. Matherne had his latest strong performance, completing 20 of 24 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns. He wasn’t intercepted.
Taylor scored four times, two through the air and two on the ground, and piled up 270 yards of total offense on 18 touches. Taylor topped 100 yards rushing (161) and receiving (109).
Semien hauled in four passes for 95 yards. He and Sully Martin each caught touchdown passes.
Dat Turks led Benton, rushing 22 times for 106 yards.
WEST MONROE 49, HAHNVILLE 14 — The Tigers had a tough draw in the first round as the No. 27 seed, and a trip to West Monroe turned out to be the end of the HHS season as the Rebels rolled to victory on the back of a 28-point second quarter.
West Monroe (9-2) led 14-7 after one, but Hahnville was beset by turnovers in the second frame. The Rebels returned a staggering three interceptions for scores, as Xavier Woods took two back and Alex Yount returned another to put West Monroe up 42-7 at halftime.
Woods also returned a punt for a touchdown before halftime, capping a disastrous second quarter for the Tigers.
Hahnville (6-5) led 7-0 early on after Jerquinick Sandolph returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a score.
Ernest Thompson added a late touchdown run for Hahnville.
