LAPLACE – A fatal accident on Airline Highway in Reserve Wednesday morning claimed the life of a 34-year-old woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a release from State Police.
The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. on Airline Highway near West 10th Street, said Trooper Melissa Matey, spokesperson for State Police Troop B.
Angelle Cordoves Sellars of Reserve was killed after the 2008 Nissan Altima she was driving was struck by 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Matey said Cordoves was traveling westbound on Airline Highway when she began to make a U-turn in the roadway to cross over onto the eastbound lanes of traffic. Her car was then struck by a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Penelope Chachere, 64, of Garyville.
Matey said Chachere and her 13-year-old passenger were transported to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace with moderate injuries. Chachere was administered a toxicology exam, but she was not believed to be impaired at the time of the accident. Both Chacherie and the 13-year-old were wearing seatbelts.
Matey said Cordoves suffered severe injuries and was transported to River Parishes Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Cordoves was not wearing a seat belt and impairment is not suspected, however, toxicology results are pending the outcome of the autopsy.
