Voting the duty of every of-age American

Today is an important day in the River Parishes and across the state. It is a day for the citizens of the state who are at least 18 to let their voices be heard regarding the direction of government.
A number of important elections are taking place today. While the governor’s race has enjoyed a lower profile than in years past, the race for lieutenant governor has been rather heated as many believe Gov. Bobby Jindal may vacate the governor’s seat early in favor of a national position within the Republican Party, leaving the lieutenant governor in control.
Additionally, the restructuring of district lines in accordance with the results of the 2010 U.S. Census has led to a high number of first-time candidates for the Louisiana Legislature. Also, with many schools systems across the state receiving poor grades in the last round of District Performance Scores, the elections for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education seats have also taken on extra weight.
Locally, St. John the Baptist, St. James and St. Charles parishes will all be voting for parish president today. With the federal government in a virtual state of disarray, local leadership has become all the more relevant. Also, voters in St. John and St. James will be casting ballots for sheriff — again, a position not to be taken lightly.
“Freedom” and “democracy” are words heard so often these days their very meanings are threatened. By exercising your right to vote — the fundamental element of democracy — you will be not only an active participant in the process but also strengthening the very concepts that make this nation great.
