LUTCHER — Broadmoor came into Friday’s district game with Lutcher determined to make things interesting against the favored Bulldogs, and that’s indeed what it did for much of the first half.
But as many opponents of the Bulldogs have experienced, slowing down Lutcher is one thing; stopping them for 48 minutes is another altogether.
Ruston Matherne’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Jared Poche put the Bulldogs ahead 28-14 entering the half and LHS coasted from there, scoring twice more to earn a 42-14 victory at the Dog Yard.
Lutcher (4-1) has now won four straight games and moves to 2-0 in District 6-4A. Broadmoor (3-2) drops to 1-1 in district.
Daniel Taylor rushed for three touchdowns and 124 yards on 14 carries, while Matherne rushed for 69 yards on nine attempts. Through the air, Matherne completed 13 of 20 passes for 140 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Poche completed all three of his passes for 53 yards. Brandon Bourgeois led the Bulldogs in receiving on three catches for 60 yards and a score.
The Bucs led 14-13 early in the second quarter after a 3-yard Maurice Stewart touchdown run with 8:30 left in the first half.
Three minutes later, Taylor capped a LHS drive with a 6-yard scoring run of his own to make it 21-14. And with 1:20 to go before halftime, Matherne dialed up Poche to push the lead to 28-14.
Taylor ripped off a 48-yard scoring run four minutes into the second half to all but put things out of reach; a 3-yard score by Poche did it altogether.
Lutcher more than doubled up Broadmoor in terms of total yardage, outgaining the Bucs 396-178. The big difference came through the air, as LHS limited Broadmoor to just 24 passing yards.
Joshua Rogers led Broadmoor’s offense, gaining 66 yards on 15 carries.
