LAPLACE – A local non-profit group has teamed up with a former New Orleans Saint and the LaPlace Walgreens location in an effort to raise money for St. John the Baptist Parish recreation.

Former Saints running back Deuce McAllister will be on hand at the LaPlace Walgreens, 1815 W. Airline Highway, on Saturday, June 25, as part of an event dubbed “Community Day.” The event was organized by local real estate agent and business owner Eliza Eugene and her non-profit group, Blessed to be a Blessing.

Eugene said the event is an effort to raise money for the parish recreation department, which is in need of supplies and equipment for the area parks.

“Many parks in our community have nothing,” Eugene said. “No equipment, no swings sets, nothing for children and residents to play on. All the money raised will go toward helping the recreation department purchase whatever they need.”

Eugene said the event will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and McAllister will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to sign memorabilia at a cost of $5 per item.

“Everyone is encouraged to bring footballs, hats and jerseys,” Eugene said. “We will also have items to be purchased on site.”

In addition to the autograph signing, Eugene said she is working with local vendors to offer food and drinks, with all proceeds going toward the cause.

“Walgreens has already stepped up and donated $1,500 toward the cause,” Eugene said. “They are also working to raise more money for us.”

Eugene said local companies and organizations are welcome to set up booths and tables during the event. For more information, contact Eugene at 985-359-9954.
