St. Charles Parish schedules recycling drop-off events

St. Charles Parish residents will once again be able to turn in recyclable materials during monthly drop-off events through at least March 2011.

The events will kick off from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 8 at St. Charles Plaza on Highwya 90 in Luling and the Allen Arterbury Building on River Road in New Sarpy. (The January event has been moved from its regular date on the first Saturday of the month due to the New Years holiday.) Recycling is free to the public.

Other confirmed recycling drop-off dates include Feb. 5 and March 5. Further dates in 2011 will be announced within the next few months based on the St. Charles Parish Council’s decision on including curbside recycling service in an upcoming garbage hauling contract, which expires at the end of March.

Materials accepted include plastic containers (numbers 1-7), paper, cardboard, paperboard, shredded paper (in bags), newspapers, magazines, phone books and metal containers such as aluminum and steel. Glass and plastic shopping bags are not accepted. Items do not need to be sorted but should be packed loosely or in garbage bags that can easily be torn open during the drop-off.

Those interested in bringing materials to the drop-off events should ensure bags, boxes and other

enclosures are easy to handle. Drop-offs are typically done in drive-through fashion, with volunteers unloading recyclables directly from vehicles.
