PLAQUEMINE – Brianna Arnold scored a team high 20 points to lead Plaquemine to a 46-42 home victory over West St. John Tuesday.
The Rams’ Jaylyn Gordon hit a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to pull West St. John within three, 45-42, but the time remaining forced the Rams to foul and Plaquemine extended their final victory margin.
Danasia Bell led West St. John (4-2) with a game-high 21 points. Gordon added 15.
Each team had trouble getting it going on offense early. The Green Devils led 6-4 after the first quarter, but the teams would combine for only one single digit offering the rest of the way. The Rams trailed by nine entering the fourth largely due to a third quarter that saw the Green Devils outscore West St. John 17-10.
“We had a couple of turnovers (in the third quarter) that let them get going,” said West St. John coach Lester Smith. “We got close in the fourth, but when it got late we had to put them on the line.”
Smith said his team let some early opportunities slip away, particularly in the first period.
“We missed three or four layups,” said Smith. “We missed two of three free throws. Those were plays that would have put us ahead. We did play with great effort, though, and that’s the positive thing.”
Smith and the Rams turned their attention to the Higgins tournament that began yesterday. Today, West St. John will play at 10:30 a.m. against Algiers Technical, then at 2:15 against Cohen.
