St. James saw a 21-11 lead slip away on the road at Loranger and with it its season Friday night, as the Wildcats came up on the losing end of a 24-23 decision in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Wildcats (4-7) led 14-11 at the half but failed to capitalize a number of chances to break the game open. Loranger hung around, ultimately taking advantage by scoring touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters.

“We really should have had control of the game,” said St. James coach Rick Gaille. “We had an interception return and a punt return for touchdowns called back, both times due to an uncalled for block in the back. We go up 21-11 and throw a couple of really bad interceptions …when it comes down to it though, they made plays tonight. We didn’t.”

Alonzo Lewis was St. James’ top producer, hauling in three catches for 136 yards. Junius Champagne caught three passes for 50 yards. Kenneth Armant was the wildcats’ leading rusher with 80 yards on six carries, but three other Wildcats gained minus-1 yards on 16 carries.

“Early we were physical and able to block them. But as the game went on, we became less and less effective at the line,” said Gaille. “To Loranger’s credit, they raised their level of play, then kept their energy level constant.”

Shaquille Narcisse rushed for two touchdowns and passed for 205 yards and a score. But he also threw four interceptions.

No. 12 seeded Loranger now stands at 8-3. It will travel to face Parkview in round two.
