NEW ORLEANS – St. Charles faced Lusher for the third time on Thursday, this time in the first round of the Division IV state volleyball playoffs. And for the third time, the 11th seeded Lions walked away with a victory, 25-14, 25-14, 25-15.
Heather Orillion tallied 20 digs for the Comets. Emily Picciola had three aces. Nicole Doming had two blocks and Cori Millet added three kills. Raven Becnel led in assists with 10.
The Comets had to wait and see if they earned a spot into the playoffs after losing to John Curtis in a district playoff last week to determine a second district postseason qualifier behind Riverside. But when the brackets came out, SCC was pitted against a familiar foe.
“We were really excited to keep our season going,” said St. Charles coach Kelly Cupit. “We did have to deal with some changes to our lineup due to injury, but I’m proud of the way they fought through.”
Cupit said her team made some adjustments from the first two matches against the Lions, but that while some of those were productive, Lusher had too much in the end for the underdog Comets. The Comets best chance to swing things came in the third game, when SCC led by as many as five at one point, but Lusher was able to recover.
“They played with all they had, but it just wasn’t enough on this particular day,” said Cupit.
The Comets finish their season with a record of 10-22.
