Paper recognizes achievements, efforts

Each Wednesday, L’Observateur recognizes individuals and businesses in the River Parishes who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.
We believe an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.
This week we salute:
• Former St. Charles Catholic High School students, and LSU graduates, Amanda Flores Morgan and Jessica Eschette McDaniel for writing and publishing “Goodnight Tigers,” a children’s book that plays off of the old favorite “Goodnight Moon.” The book introduces youngsters to the traditions of Louisiana’s flagship university.
• Reserve resident Raydel Morris, who was recently appointed and sworn in as a replacement to departing St. John the Baptist Parish Councilman-at-Large Richard “Dale” Wolfe. Morris was a 24-year veteran of the parish’s utilities department before retiring in 2001. He will serve in Wolfe’s place until a special election can be held in April.
• Lutcher dentist Dr. Greg Phillips, who is once again buying back Halloween candy from children so that it can be sent to American soldiers overseas. Phillips is offering $1 for each pound of candy brought into his office and all children who bring in candy are entered into a drawing for a Nintendo DS portable game system. Today is the last day for the candy buyback.
• The Riverside Academy girls’ volleyball team, which recently wrapped up an undefeated season in District 7-2A. The team now moves on to the playoffs with a matchup against Mansfield at Riverside on Thursday.
