BOUTTE – Destrehan’s defense is known for putting the clamps on the competition, but Ahmad White and Hahnville were having none of that.
White rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns—and added another touchdown via his arm—as Hahnville rolled to a 35-14 win at Hahnville.
“We felt like if we could get to the second level, there were yards to be had,” said Hahnville coach Lou Valdin. “So long as their defensive line isn’t making the tackles, you’ve got a chance to do some things.”
Always a premier matchup between the two District 6-5A rivals, the clash has now gone to Hahnville for the second straight season. HHS (5-1), Dutchtown and East St. John all remain tied atop the district at 2-0.
White accounted for the first three scores of the night. His first touchdown spanned five yards. The second came on a halfback pass play in which he hit Dontrell Strickland for a 24-yard touchdown pass, and the third came on a 42-yard run.
Brian Ensminger dialed up top target Derek Howard on a 5-yard pass to make it 28-0 late in the first half.
Destrehan (2-5, 0-2) gave itself a bit of hope late in the first half when, as time expired, Dillan Dent connected with Rickey Jefferson deep for a 45-yard touchdown.
“They were getting the second half kickoff, so that kind of put the pressure back on us,” said Valdin.
Then, in the third quarter, the duo connected again for an explosive 73-yard play.
But that’s as close as the Wildcats would come to tipping the rivalry back in their favor. White’s 2-yard score in the fourth quarter officially put DHS away.
“I thought the defense played well all night,” said Valdin. “We gave up the two big plays, but we pressured the quarterback all night.”
Brian Ensminger finished 10-for-15 with a touchdown, interception, and 169 yards. He left the game in the second half with an injury, but Valdin said the significance of it is not yet known.
HHS outgained DHS 425-252.
