LUTCHER – For the second straight week, Lutcher got off to a slow offensive start. For the second straight weeks, the Bulldogs found a way in spite of it.

Austin Brack’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry with 2:38 left in the game lifted Lutcher to a 20-16 victory over District 8-4A foe Belle Chasse in a matchup of 2008’s Class 3A champion (LHS) and 4A titlist.

“Belle Chasse’s backs were against the wall and we had to step up to that challenge. Our defense really came though tonight,” said Lutcher coach Tim Detillier. “It’s a shame anyone had to lose, given the effort put forth.”

Lutcher took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Brack’s 8-yard touchdown run with 10:25 left before halftime, but it would be the Bulldogs’ only points until the fourth quarter – a stat in large part aided by four lost LHS fumbles.

Belle Chasse took a 9-7 lead on Dylan Parker’s 4-yard scoring run with 8:20 left in the third quarter. That drive began deep in LHS territory after the kickoff hit a LHS blocker and was recovered by the visitors.

Lutcher (6-1, 2-0) answered in the fourth quarter on Jared Poche’s 1-yard touchdown run (LHS missed a conversion attempt), but Farron Jones put Belle Chasse back ahead with a screen pass of 11 yards to Parker on fourth and goal, fighting his way into the endzone and making it 16-13.

“He was very, very determined and he pushed it across. We just had to answer,” said Detillier.

With time dwindling, Belle Chasse forced a Lutcher punt. But the Cardinals, faced with a fourth and inches on the ensuing possession, elected to go for it. Lutcher’s defense held firm, setting the Bulldogs up on a very short field. Brack and Landry quickly took advantage.

“It was an unbelievable catch by Jarvis,” said Detillier. “Austin Brack put it right where he had to.”

Brack played most of the night at quarterback for Lutcher. He completed 8-of-15 passes for 141 yards while running for 45 yards.

Daniel Taylor rushed eight times for 62 yards but left the game in the first half with a hip flexor injury.

Trevor Englade caught four passes for 76 yards for the Bulldogs.

Parker led Belle Chasse with 121 yards on 21 touches.

“It was low scoring early, then back and forth in that second half. I guarantee nobody left here early, tonight,” said Detillier.
