Paper recognizes achievements, efforts

Each Wednesday, L’Observateur recognizes individuals and businesses in the River Parishes who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.
We believe an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.
This week we salute:
• Members of the St. John the Baptist Parish Lions Club who regularly spearhead efforts to promote improved eye care for residents. The group recently refurbished a drop box for recycled eyeglasses that was placed near the entrance of the CVS Pharmacy on Airline Highway in LaPlace.
• The St. Charles Parish Wetland Watchers Club, which recently opened an educational park on the western shore of Lake Pontchartrain near the Bonnet Carre Spillway in Norco. The large park features a playground, a pavilion, fishing piers and a nature walk. The group has also worked to restore some of the eroding shoreline along the lake.
• Ron’eeka Hill and Shelby Clement, who were crowned Miss Andouille and Miss Teen Andouille respectively at the Andouille pageant on Oct. 1. In addition to reigning over the annual Andouille Festival in LaPlace this weekend, the queens will also compete in the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals Pageant.
• Hundreds of area golfers who turned out last Friday for the 12th annual United Way Golf Tournament at Riverlands Golf and Country Club in LaPlace. Proceeds from the fundraiser, which amounted to more than $67,000, help supplement the St. John Parish United Way’s annual budget.
