St. James Parish winner at Relay

The Relay For Life of St. James Parish received an award for having the third highest per capita earning event in Louisiana.

The award was received by Trista Brazan, St. James Parish event chair, and Rodie Martin, Relay Leadership Council member, who attended the Mid-South Relay For Life Summit in Jackson, Miss., in September.

The 2010 Relay For Life of St. James Parish raised a total of $116,500 for the American Cancer Society in April. The per capita gift is $54,022.

“We are thrilled to be recognized as an award-winning Relay event,” said Martin. “Our committee and team participants work extremely hard and are very generous with their time and contributions. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

The Relay For Life of St. James Parish committee is currently planning the 2011 Relay event to be held on April 9, 2011, at Lutcher Park.

Kickoff for the 2011 Relay For Life of St James Parish is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. at Victory Assembly Church in Vacherie. Relay For Life is a team-building activity like no other, and it is a fun way to take part in the fight against cancer. American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is the nation’s largest fund raiser.

Team recruitment is also underway for the Relay For Life of St. James Parish..

The theme for the 2011 Relay is “Fight Dat,” Teams are encouraged to decorate their campsite in a sport or team theme.

Relay For Life is a non-competitive, overnight event. Teams are recruited from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations. Each group chooses a team theme, and members take turns walking or running around a track during the night. Games and activities held during the event make it a festive occasion.

“We invite everyone in the community to take part in the Relay For Life,” said Trista Brazan, Relay Chairman. “Where else can you have so much fun and support such an important cause?”

Money raised from the event supports American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.
