St. Charles coach Frank Monica never dreamed things would unfold the way they did on Friday night. As a start to a season, you couldn’t ask for much more.

St. Charles led 35-0 at one point in the first quarter on its way to pounding host Woodlawn, 48-10.

“We had a great start, got some turnovers and cashed in on a short field,” said Monica. “Early in the season, teams tend to make mistakes and we took advantage.

“But I have to say I’m surprised. Woodlawn boasts so much speed and talent, so many explosive players … I thought we might be in for a long night. I’m glad it worked out well for us. We’ll take it.”

For the second straight week St. Charles showed off a dominant rushing attack, rolling up 272 yards on the ground. Marcus Hall carried 12 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns while Lazedrick Thompson bruised for 62 yards and three scores on eight carries.

St. Charles struck early on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Donnie Savoie to tight end Harley Scioneaux at 10:36 of the first quarter.

Only 1:22 later, Hall would score his first touchdown on a 66-yard run, making it 14-0 not three minutes into the game.

Special teams helped generate the next score when the Comets downed Woodlawn’s punter at the one with no kick. Thompson pushed it in on the next play to make it 21-0. Michael Brock later added a 1-yard score of his own, and Hall scored on a 7-yarder with 3:12 left in the quarter to make it 35-0.

Woodlawn added a field goal before the end of the quarter, but the damage was more than done.

The Panthers fumbled four times on the night, losing three.

“I never thought it would unfold like it did,” said Monica. “They made some mistakes, but we forced some of those, too.”

Thompson added scores of 30 and 10 yards in the second half.

Defensive end LaJaylin Smith logged eight tackles and a sack for SCC.

Jermichael Collins led Woodlawn with 95 yards on 13 carries.
