LAPLACE – The West Bank civic group Girls in Action is hosting a clothing drive today from 8-11 a.m. at Ruth Plaza on Louisiana Highway 18 in Edgard.

According to member Krishell Thomas, all items of clothing and shoes are welcome, and the drive will benefit Louisiana Teen Challenge.

Louisiana Teen Challenge is a program that provides youth, adults and families suffering from drug and alcohol addiction with faith-based methods to conquer their addictions and re-enter society as productive participants.

The program was started in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1958 by the Rev. David Wilkerson. It came to Louisiana 30 years ago. It operates centers in New Orleans, Dodson, Winnfield and Lake Charles.

Those in go through two distinct phases — induction and training. The induction phase serves to acclimate participants to the life and rigors of the program and lasts about four months. After completing the first phase, they move on to and eight-month training phase.

Upon completion of the 12-month program, students have the option to complete a six-month internship with the center’s ministry or to return home, where they must stay active in a local church congregation for the same period of time.

Besides the Girls in Action clothing drive, those wishing to donate may do so at special boxes located near participating retailers.

In LaPlace, a donation box is located next to the EZ Serve at the corner of Main Street and Airline Highway.
