Kellie Brady, right, a recent graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School, accepts the Stephanie “Nikki” Wilking Memorial Leadership Award from past Rotary Club of LaPlace President Melanie Basile. Wilking, who died at the age of 17 in 2001, was founder of “Kids for Kops,” a local group of young people dedicated to raise money to provide bullet proof vests for St. John Parish sheriff’s deputies. The award was designed to match the ideals and standards demonstrated by Wilking – vision, initiative, leadership and originality. Brady was president of the National Honor Society, which this year started a new service project as they assisted the Rotary Club with monthly bingo at Place DuBourg. She also participated in the March for Life in Washington, D.C., in January, delivered lunches for SCC’s Thanksgiving food drive and was a group leader for St. Joan of Arc’s Bible school program, among other things.
