After two seasons without the crown, the Riverside girls recaptured a district title, winning the District 9-2A meet on Wednesday at East Jefferson by a wide margin over second place McGehee.

The Rebels scored 126 points, compared to 54 for McGehee.

“We’ve got a full team this year and a pretty good one,” said Riverside coach Joe Trosclair. “Over the course of the year, we’ve gotten better. All of our girls basically qualified, so I feel like we stack up fairly well in the regional.”

Riverside’s boys took second place overall behind champion John Curtis.

Heather Cancienne was named the district’s track MVP after finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles (18.12) and the 300-meter hurdles (53.64). Cancienne also was part of the winning 4×400 meter relay team, along with Channon Simmons, Kaitlyn Masters and Taylor Terrio.

“I’m very proud of both of them. Really, I’m proud of all the girls, said Riverside coach Joe Trosclair. “Hopefully, those two bring that into the regional.”

LaFountain also helped lead the 4×100 relay team to victory, along with Maurie Laiche, Terrio and Jamie Bolden.
