HARVEY – West St. John has always had a strong reputation on the track. What has given boys track coach Martin Sylvain hope for great things in 2010, though, is its newfound power in the field. Friday’s West Jefferson track and field meet did little to discourage him.
Three Rams took top three finishes in field events, more impressive when considering West St. John’s Class 1A status in a field of much bigger schools.
“We’re known to be solid on the track, but now every week I’m coming out of these field events with a smile on my face,” said Sylvain.
Ronnie Feist took second place in the shot put with a throw of 44-6. Demiere Gordon was second in the discus with a throw of 132-7. And Blake Carter took third place in the shot put, his toss going 42-5.
Sylvain pointed out that although no running times placed in the top three at the event, his team’s track times were right on pace for its soon-to-be Class 1A competition later on.
“We’ve been talking about balance all season,” said Sylvain. “When you’re scoring points in both areas, it’s what makes you a threat for state.”
