BATON ROUGE – St. Charles coach Ty Monica wasn’t calling it ‘just another game’ last week. He admitted the Comets had Tuesday’s game with fellow softball power Parkview Baptist circled on its calendar.

In the same way, he isn’t calling it ‘just another win’ today.

St. Charles brought home win from Baton Rouge after downing the Eagles 5-3 at Parkview Baptist in a rematch of the 2008 Class 3A state championship game that resulted in a Comets title.

“We put a lot into this game,” said Monica. “The thing about this team is I don’t think they know how to back down from anyone. They don’t know any better.”

Megan Louque collected two RBIs in the win. Courtney Western was 2-for-4 at the plate.

On the mound, Western improved to 2-0 on the season. She allowed three runs on 10 hits and three walks, striking out eight.

She and the Comet defense had to escape a number of tight jams. Parkview had runners in scoring position in each inning.

“She battled every inning,” said Monica. “Most of the time they had runners on second and third with less than two outs. She fought, threw a bunch of pitches, and we made some plays to get out of trouble.”

Parkview led 1-0 entering the third inning, but St. Charles took control with a four run frame. SCC tacked on another in the fifth inning, and Western and the Comet defense held steady from there, not allowing a big Eagle inning.

Monica feared a letdown on Thursday as St. Charles opened its Comet Classic tournament with a matchup with Academy of our Lady.

“Typically after your highest high, you experience your lowest low,” said Monica.

But SCC came through with a 4-0 win to remain undefeated.

Louque (2-0) struck out four and allowed five hits and a walk in a shutout performance.

Western was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Louque went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jaymie Remondet went 2-for-3, and Kadie Levatino drove in a run.

It was the home opener for SCC after three games on the road.

“It felt good to finally be home,” said Monica.
