METAIRIE – St. Charles saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon as it fell at the hands of 13th seeded Country Day, 2-0 in the bi-district round of the Division III playoffs.
“It’s tough on your seniors, especially,” said St. Charles coach Bill Ballard. “At the same time, when you see how much those kids care … it’s good to see the emotion. But like I told the boys, despite our record, I think we had a much better team this year.”
The Cajuns advance to face No. 4 Ben Franklin in the Regional round.
Country Day scored both of its goals in the first half, in the 23rd and 34th minute respectively. Each was set up by a Cajuns’ corner kick.
“On the first, they converted on a header, and on the second, we had a blown responsibility,” said Ballard. “We set up right, but didn’t execute. When you don’t, you’re not gonna win the play.”
The Comets outshot Country Day 6-1 in the second half, but could not convert a score.
St. Charles (6-11-1) played in a number of close games this season against a tough schedule, and Ballard says that the future seems bright with seven players to return as seniors next season.
He also said that but for a few breaks, the present may have shined more bright.
“We were so close to having our record flip-flopped this season,” said Ballard. “This was an excellent group to work with. They played hard and well … What more can you really ask?”
