LAPLACE – High school football fans in the River Parishes seem to have a good handle on which teams are headed to the showdown in the Superdome at the end of the season.

Last week, L’Observateur asked its readers to decide which of the five remaining River Parishes high school football teams had the best chance to take home a state championship. The two teams that received the most votes, Lutcher High School and St. Charles Catholic, are the only two teams still alive in playoff action.

The resounding leader in the poll was Lutcher, who handily beat the Huntington High Raiders 48-20. The Bulldogs received more than 60 percent of all vote registered throughout the week. Meanwhile St. Charles Catholic, who bested Farmerville, 21-12, in a tight battle, received 20 percent of the votes.

The remaining teams votes break down as follows:

• West St. John High School, who lost a tough game to Oak Grove, received 8 percent of the votes.

• Hahnville High School, who fell to the undefeated Rummel Raiders, received 5 percent of the votes.

• Riverside Academy, who ran into a buzz saw in John Curtis Christian School, received 5 percent of the votes.

This week’s question: When the U.S. House of Representatives voted on the proposed healthcare reform bill, New Orleans-area Rep. Joseph Cao was the only Republican to vote in favor of the bill, a fact which outraged many. What do you think is an elected official’s primary responsibility when voting on legislative matters?
