St. Charles running back Lazedrick Thompson scored four touchdowns to lead the Comets past Douglass on Friday afternoon at Pan American Stadium, 49-6.
The Comets (9-1, 6-1) finish District 9-2A play in sole possession of second place behind champion John Curtis.
The St. Charles defense dominated, holding the Bobcats to minus-50 yards and just one first down. Douglass’ lone score came on a 99-yard fumble return by James May.
It was one of three fumbles and four overall turnovers by the Comets offense.
St. Charles coach Frank Monica stressed that the trend could not continue with the beginning of the postseason looming on Friday.
“We need to correct it if we want to make any noise in the playoffs,” he said. “We had some turnovers that were really unforced.”
At the same time, he praised the effort of the Comet defense and special teams.
“We started on their side of the field most of the night,“ Monica said. “Once we jumped ahead, we could make them one dimensional.”
Thompson put SCC ahead 7-0 with his first score, a 1-yard run in the first quarter. Jeffrey Hall doubled the lead with a 6-yard scamper. Special teams got in on the act as well — SCC blocked a punt and Dalton Hale rolled in for a score to make it 21-0 after a quarter.
Thompson upped the lead to 28-0 in the second quarter on a 3-yard run, and Henry Faucheux added his lone passing score of the day on a 15-yard pass to Tyler Roussel.
Douglass (2-8, 2-5) stopped St. Charles from making it a 42-point game at halftime when May recovered a fumble at the Douglass 1 and brought it back for a score.
But the rest of the day was business as usual for SCC. Thompson added scoring runs of 21 and 29 yards to round out SCC’s regular season.
