School Closures and updates from St. John and St. Charles Parishes

LAPLACE — Parish Officials in St. John and St. Charles Parishes say they are monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Ida as it approaches the gulf coast near the Alabama-Florida border this afternoon.

St. John acting Chief Administrative Officer Buddy Boe said St John is not anticipating any requirement for evacuation in response to the storm He said residents should prepare there homes adequately for a potential wind event by clearing out tree branches and securing any loose items that could be blown around in heavy winds.

St. Charles spokeswoman Renee Simpson said parish emergency officials are expecting heavy winds and rains this evening, but are not anticipating any threat of high water.

School systems in St. John and St. Charles have made the move to close school early in an effort to keep traffic at a minimum. The closure schedule for St. John is as follows:

East St. John High 11:00 a.m.

East St. John Elementary 11:20 a.m.

Fifth Ward Elementary 11:40

Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet 12:00

John L. Ory Magnet 12:00

LaPlace Elementary 11:40

Lake Pontchartrain Elementary 11:20

Leon Godchaux Accelerated Program / Pre-GED Options 12:00

West St. John Elementary 11:30

West St. John High 11:10

In St. Charles Parish, Luling Elementary and Head Start will dismiss at 11:10 a.m. Middle and high schools will dismiss at 11:51 a.m. Lower elementary schools and St. Rose Elementary will dismiss at 12:30 p.m.

The archdiocese of New Orleans has said that all schools in their system will be closed today.
