LAPLACE – Authorities in St. John are investigating a shooting incident in LaPlace on Monday in which a 24-year-old man was shot once in the leg.

Capt. Dane Clement, public information officer for the St. John Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred around 6:20 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Joe Parquet Circle. He said as deputies were arriving at the scene they learned that the victim, whose name was not released, was taken to River Parishes Hospital with a gunshot wound to the calf.

Clement said when deputies questioned the man at the hospital he refused to provide any information about the incident and was uncooperative with investigators.

Witnesses to the shooting said a man walked toward a group of people, including the victim, who were behind an apartment in the area. The suspect, who was described as a clean-shaven black man with a short haircut and wearing a white T-shirt with multi-colored printing, then fired several shots into the crowd from a pistol. The victim then ran into a nearby apartment and later arrived at the hospital for treatment and was later transferred to University Hospital in New Orleans. No other injuries were reported.
