Sacrifice should be done with good motives

Mardi Gras 2009 is over and the Lenten Season has begun. Lent is a time when some religious people, especially Catholics, fast and give up things they enjoy as a sacrifice before Easter. I think many people use this period to help themselves control problems they may have.

Some people fast and give up sweets, hoping to lose weight. Others give up drinking alcohol for six weeks, trying to prove to themselves and others that they can control their drinking.

The Lenten Season should be a holy season in preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The motive for sacrificing is not to prove to ourselves

and others that we can discipline our behavior for a season, but to worship God with our sacrifice and be prepared for the Easter celebration.

The bottom line is that whatever we do in the Name of our Lord and Savior, it’s our motives by which we’ll be judged.

I’m reminded that the Bible says God desires obedience rather than sacrifice.

As I look back on my days before I was a Christian, I recall trying to participate in religious customs to

make up for my disobedience to God. I thank God that the blinders have been taken off my eyes and I can see and understand what God expects. I admit that I fall short many times, but God has patience with me as long as my motives are right.
