After finishing 2-13 last season, Reserve Christian could have been called something of an afterthought.
This season, the Lady Eagles can call themselves something else: district champions.
Reserve made that distinction official on Tuesday night with a dominating 58-22 victory over Grand Isle in Reserve, netting the Eagles the outright District 10-C title.
It was the first district crown in girls basketball for RCS since 2005, when seniors Trenell and Trenese Smith led the way for the Eagles.
Reserve’s Daysha Blount led all scorers with 24 points.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Blount said. “I’m very excited about it. It feels like all of our hard work has been paying off. We feel like we always had potential, and (RCS coach Richard Englander) believed in us and helped pull it out of us.”
Said teammate Raven Campbell: “We’re really enthused about it. There was a lot more dedication and work put in this season. Coach always tells us to finish what we started, and we did a good job of that (on Tuesday).”
Jamie Bolden scored 16 points, while Jermani Thompson added eight for the Eagles.
Reserve led 15-9 after the first quarter, then blew the game open. The Eagles outscored Grand Isle 17-2 in the second quarter, then 26-11 in the second half in closing things out.
“The girls were patient on offense,” said Englander. “We got a lot of our offense off of turnovers, and I think it took the wind out of their sails a bit. They never recovered.”
The win meant a Reserve sweep of Grand Isle, after the Eagles took a 44-39 victory on Feb. 3.
Campbell said this meeting had a different feel, even before the game.
“We wanted to come out and conquer,” she said. “We felt like we needed to show them what we are all about this year.”
Reserve will attempt to clinch an undefeated district mark at Phoenix on Monday.
