LaPlace teen Zachary Revall (right) receives an award from LaPlace Volunteer Fire Chief John Snyder (left) for Revall’s heroic efforts to help save a family from a burning home. Revall was dropping off friends following a New Years Eve party when he noticed smoke and flames emanating from the roof of a home on Devon Road in the River Forest subdivision. Revall got out of his car, pounded on the door of the home to wake the residents, then ran to a neighbor to contact the fire department. The good Samaritan entered and exited the home multiple times to help evacuate the four adult residents, including one who was paralyzed.

Fire officials said the blaze was started by a stray bottle rocket that became lodged between the home’s roof and siding.

Revall and his family were treated to dinner at the firehouse prior to the awards presentation, where Revall received a certificate and a medal for his service.
