St. Charles clinched at least a share of the District 7-III championship with its 7-0 victory last Thursday night over Riverside. But the Comets aren’t getting too excited just yet.

“The girls know they’ve got one more game they’ve got to win,” said St. Charles coach Don Peyton. “They want to be the outright champions. This was just another step.”

Reyna Lubin scored four goals to lead St. Charles, which led 4-0 at halftime.

“Reyna’s very impressive,” said Riverside coach Stephen Millet. “She has a way of dominating a game. It’s hard to stay with her.”

Clarissa Guidry, Cassie Drexel, and Kristen Carrier each scored goals for SCC (14-3-2).

The match was scoreless for awhile, something Peyton said may have had a little to do with the night’s atmosphere.

“We started a little slowly,” he said. “There were some mental mistakes. I think with it being senior night, they were a little hyped up. But they settled down, and we made our push.”

Millet said his team missed an opportunity early.

“We had our opportunities,” Millet said. “At one point, we had a ball roll right in front of the net, but we missed it. That could have made it 1-0. And who knows, maybe it would have ended up a little differently. But from there, it was just very hard to stop Reyna.”

Jasmine Tregre and was the winning goalkeeper for St. Charles.

Riverside (4-5-1) picked up a 2-0 victory over the weekend over the Dutchtown junior varsity on Saturday.

Shelby DeSlatte and Alyssa Heckathorn each scored goals for Riverside.

“It was a good win for our confidence, especially before the playoffs,” said Millet.
