Make it two straight undefeated district crowns for the St. Charles Comets.

St. Charles clinched the District 6-III championship Tuesday with a win in three games over Port Allen (25-16, 25-13, 25-21), then made an undefeated district season official by topping Plaquemine in three games (25-16, 25-13, 25-17) at St. Charles on Thursday.

“It’s a great confidence booster for our team,” said St. Charles Coach Brandy Ryan, who hasn’t lost a district match in her tenure at the school. “We’ve been on such a rocky road all season. When we started the year, we knew we wanted to win another undefeated district title. And that’s what we did.”

Brooke Becker scored 13 kills for the Comets (13-11, 8-0) against Port Allen. Courtney Western had 20 assists, five aces and seven digs. Meg Gustafson had two blocks.

St. Charles has won 16 district matches in a row under Ryan over the last two years.

The Comets led throughout the Port Allen match, never allowing the Pelicans to make a push. That was in contrast to the teams’ first matchup, which the Comets also won in three — but a match in which Port Allen hung tough in each game.

Ryan likes how her team is rounding into form, and said that the team’s performance over the weekend at Dominican’s tournament was a boon to the team’s recent performance. SCC fell to Chapelle, Assumption, and Chalmette, and defeated Ben Franklin. But St. Charles challenged in each match, and all were against top notch, upper classification teams.

“When we play those kinds of teams, our play improves dramatically,” says Ryan. “Those are ranked top tier teams. Playing those teams is what gets you ready for the playoffs.”

Agaist Plaquemine, Western had 21 assists. Gustafson had eight kills, and Becker added six aces. Kadie Levatino notched six digs.
