August beats incumbent for St. John constable, pair of incumbents retain JP positions

LAPLACE – A constable seat and two Justice of the Peace positions were up for grabs in the few minor races on the St. John Parish ballot Saturday.

In the race for District 1 Constable, newcomer Chyrall August narrowly defeated incumbent Milton C. Cox Jr. With three of three precincts reporting, August collected 765 votes for 52.76 percent of the vote, while Cox managed 685 votes, which was good for 47.24 percent of the vote. District 1 represents the Edgard region of the parish.

District 1 Justice of the Peace went to incumbent Virgie Jarrow-Johnson, who held off challenger Haston “Bun” Lewis Jr. to retain his seat. With three of the three precincts reporting, Jarrow-Johnson picked up 955 votes, or 65.10 percent of the vote. Lewis was only able to manage 512 votes, which was good for 34.90 percent of the vote.

The race for District 3 Justice of the Peace went to incumbent Diane C. Jacob, who defeated challenger Travis “Casual” Cook to keep her position. With five of the five precincts reporting, Jacob collected 966 votes for 60.45 percent of the vote, while cook picked up 632 votes, or 39.55 percent of the vote.
