Despite losing a string of key offensive seniors, it sure has looked like the same, old dominant Destrehan Wildcats over two weeks – a team that can beat you running or throwing the football.
Wynrick Smothers was 10-of-12 for 124 yards and three touchdowns, while Myron Smith and Henry Lenox combined for 107 yards and a score to lead Destrehan over host Terrebonne, 41-14 on Friday night.
On a field that was wet due to a great deal of rain, Destrehan got ahead early and never looked back.
“We were really fortunate, we scored in all phases of the game,” said Destrehan Coach Stephen Robicheaux. “We had a defensive score, and another interception return to the 1.
“We got up early, and that was important due to the field conditions. It got pretty slippery and sloppy the more we played on it.”
While names like Jordan Jefferson, Tim Molton, DaMaris Johnson and Jerico Nelson have departed from the title winning Wildcats of a year ago, Robicheaux says an offensive line that returns four of five starters has allowed the offense to remain consistent.
“Looking at the season we had, we knew a few guys would have to step up for us this year. The offensive line has done that,” he said. “These guys continue to get better every week. Coach (Jason) Madere does a fantastic job with them.”
Destrehan’s defense held Terrebonne (0-1) to 71 yards rushing on 24 attempts, and 61 yards passing.
It did not even take three minutes of gametime for Destrehan (2-0) to establish a two-touchdown lead. Smothers found Corey Vidal for a 37-yard score at the 10:11 mark of the first quarter. A little over a minute later, Brandon Blackwell would score on a 22-yard interception return to make it 14-0 with 9:09 remaining in the first.
After a stop, Smothers found Vidal for the second time in the first quarter for a score, this time from 35 yards away with 5:01 left.
Smith’s two yard run with 3:02 left in the first quarter gave Destrehan its fourth and final touchdown of the period, and a 28-0 lead.
Brandon Armstrong caught Smothers’ last scoring pass from 35-yards away, making it 35-0 in the second quarter.
Ryan Rome added two field goals the rest of the way, as DHS would go ahead 41-0 before allowing a Terrebonne score.
Vidal caught five passes for 97 yards to lead all receivers.
“The key,” Robicheaux says, “is going to be up front for us. If our offensive and defensive lines can keep up their play from the first two weeks, it’ll give our young receivers, our first year quarterback, and our young secondary a chance to thrive.
“If we can keep it up, we have a chance to be pretty good by the end of this season.”
