RESERVE – Patriotism was running high at Reserve Christian School Friday morning as students and faculty were treated to a special flag presentation from the St. John Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard.

Anne Comardelle, Reserve Christian Parent Teacher Organization president, said as part of a Grandparent’s Day celebration the school honored veterans with a flag folding presentation and brief American flag history.

“Many of the students’ grandparents served for our country,” said Comardelle. “We just felt that in addition to honoring them as grandparents, we should also honor them as veterans.”

After presentation of the colors, and a singing of “The Star Spangled Banner,” Lt. Mike Hoover of the St. John Sheriff’s Office entertained the crowd with a brief presentation on the evolution of our country’s flag. The presentation touched on the many phases the flag progressed through before finally becoming the “stars and stripes.”

“A lot of kids don’t understand the history of our flag,” said Hoover. “We want our children to honor the core beliefs of our forefathers, but we need them to understand those beliefs.”

At the conclusion of the presentation, the honor guard conducted a traditional honor guard funeral flag folding. As the guard made each of the 13 folds, Hoover kids from the school discuss what each of the folds mean.
