The Riverside golf team returned from its spring break last week and was tested from the get-go.

It’s match with Class 4A power Vandebilt Catholic last Monday provided major measuring stick for Riverside Coach Roy Aubert’s team. Each team battled light rain and wind, and in the end, Vandebilt was able to secure victory, scoring a 170 to Riverside’s 188 in a nine hole match at Belle Terre.

Mitch Bergeron led Vandebilt with a score of 39. Luke David added a score of 40 for the Terriers.

Riverside was led by Rob Doyle (41) and Cory Andry (45).

Two days later, the Rebels traveled to Chateau Country Club in Kenner to take on St. Martin’s. This time, the score was kinder to the Rebels, who took a 177-190 victory over the Saints in a nine-hole match.

Doyle again paced the Rebels with a 39. Chris Sharpless chipped in a 43.

Even when things went wrong, they seemed to go right for Riverside. Wesley Borne added a score of 47, despite breaking his favorite club during the match.

“He broke his 3-iron,” said Aubert. “He was able to recover, though.”

Andry rounded out the Rebel scoring with a 48.

“We’re progressing,” Aubert said. “We shot a 177, and realistically it could have been lower with a few breaks. But that’s golf.”

Thomas Schwartz and Andy Mathews led St. Martin’s, each posting a score of 43.
