Lutcher thrilled its home fans on Wednesday as it swept first place honors in the Lutcher Derbigny Relays in team competition.
The Bulldogs outpaced second place St. James in the boys’ competition, 120-106. Meanwhile, the girls’ team edged Assumption 97-93.
Among the boys, West St. John finished fourth with 60 points, and East St. John fifth with 57.
St. Charles finished seventh (score of 26) and Riverside ninth (15.5) to round out the field of local teams.
Along girls, ESJ finished third with a score of 85, West St. John fifth (39), St. James sixth (29) and St. Charles eighth (13).
West St. John’s Blake Comminie, Riverside’s Jesse LeBlanc, and East St. John’s Patrick Lewis all took first place honors in boys’ events.
Comminie’s throw in the discus of 133-2 gave him the nod over Lutcher’s Rashod Albert (129-08).
“It felt good, but it wasn’t my best throw this year,” said Comminie. “But when I let it go, I felt like I had it.”
LeBlanc, Riverside’s top finisher on the day, took first place in the 800 meter.
“We’ve been struggling a bit as a team this year, with a lot of young runners,” said Riverside boys’ track Coach Tim Taffi. “But Jesse’s one of our seniors, and he’s been winning at these meets for a long time. He works pretty hard at it.”
Lewis took the shot put event with a put of 47-11. Like Comminie, he professed that the throw wasn’t his best this season. But on a day as damp as Wednesday was, he seemed satisfied with the win.
“The conditions were kind of slippery, but I was happy to get pretty close to my best,” said Lewis. “It was two feet off.”
Other top boys finishers from parish teams were East St. John’s Quinton Johnson (second, 200m, 22.37) and St. Charles’ Brett Landry (second, 5:22.46).
St. Charles Coach Jerry Schexnayder said that Landry ran his best time of the year inthe event.
“He must have felt good today, he challenged for the lead,” said Schexnayder. “He’s like the Energizer bunny, he just keeps on going.”
West St. John captured first place in the 400m relay with a time of 43.14, and the 1600-meter relay (3:38.05).
On the girls’ side, East St. John’s Jacobi Wilson took second place honors in both the 100 meter (12.51) and 200 meter (25.98) events. The Wildcats also got a good performance from LaShante Smith, who finished second in the 100 meter hurdle (17.86) and 300 meter hurdle (51.15) events.
West St. John’s Ambria Major took second in the long jump event (15-10). (15-10) The Rams Tranell Mitchell placed second in the triple jump (33-0).
The East St. John relay team topped each relay event, taking first in the 400 meter (49.73), 800 meter (1:48.24) and 1600 meter (4:25.57) events.
