Chalk up another comeback for the St. Charles Comets.
SCC has been making a habit of comebacks in intra-parish games, with comeback wins first over Riverside two weeks ago, and now at home over East St. John on Saturday, 17-14.
The Wildcats had leads of 9-2 in the second inning and 14-10 in the sixth. But the Comet bats wouldn’t allow their team to lose, and a seven-run sixth inning proved the difference.
“We just weren’t throwing strikes,” said East St. John Coach Ryan Sims. We had a rough time doing that, and when we did, they made us pay.”
The Comets (13-6-2) made them pay to the tune of 15 hits, many of which drove home runners.
Corey Reed led the Comets at the plate with three hits and two RBIs. Likewise, Brandon Becker had three hits and two RBIs for St. Charles.
That said, the Comet bats weren’t the only ones on fire. Donald Goff hit two home runs in the game for ESJ, and tallied a game high six RBIs.
I’Keem Brown and Justin Howard each had three hits and two RBIs for the Wildcats (8-4-1). ESJ had 13 hits in the game.
“Both teams swung the bats real well,” said Sims. “We had our opportunities. We just didn’t cash in when we needed to.”
Alex Moss (2-0) took the win for St. Charles. ESJ’s Brandon Trant (2-1) took the loss.
St. Charles led 2-0 after an inning, but the Wildcats came roaring back in the second, scoring nine runs.
St. Charles answered in the fourth, scoring eight runs to take a 10-9 lead.
East St. John scored five in the sixth to retake the lead, 14-10. But St. Charles registered yet another big inning in a game full of them, and their eight-run sixth gave them a chance to put away the game in the seventh.
Sims said that he thought the game had a few more twists and turns left in it, but it wasn’t to be, as the Comets got the three outs it needed to secure its thirteenth win.
“I thought we were going to score some more and take it back in the seventh,” said Sims.
“We have to perform better on the mound if we’re going to be able to compete,” he added.
