LAPLACE – The St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office began taking design build proposals last month for a minimum-security temporary jail facility to be used while the permanent correctional center receives roof repair.

Chief Civil Deputy Jeffrey Clement said the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility received minor roof damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He said the sheriff’s office is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state officials to help pay for the roof repairs, and a temporary facility is needed to house inmates while work is conducted.

Clement said the project consists of two structures that will be constructed on the grounds of the jail. He said bids will be taken until December 28, 2007, and construction would begin soon after that.
