St. Charles continued its winning ways on Friday night, as held off St. Amant on the road, 37-30.

Brooke Becker scored 22 points to lead the Comets. Michelle Marzoni scored 11.

“It wasn’t our best offensive output as a team, but our defense won the game for us,” said St. Charles Coach Erin Remondet.

St. Charles is now 5-1 in its last six games.

In fact, the Comets did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter. But some excellent foul shooting combined with an effort to attack the basket allowed St. Charles to finish off St. Amant. The Comets were 9-10 from the foul line in the final quarter.

“We were going to the basket hard and we were able to draw some fouls,” said Remondet. “We’re learning how to play well and win in close games, which is something that was not the case in the past.”

St. Charles never completely shook the Gators, but did not allow any sustained St. Amant run, leading consistently throughout the game.

One of the keys was the Comets’ ability to continue to change up its defensive sets against a bigger team, something Remondet said was integral to her team’s success on the defensive end.

“We were able to keep them on their toes,” she said.

Remondet also said she was encouraged by her team’s level of play on the road against a much larger school in St. Amant.

“Speaking for myself, I feel confident in our team no matter who we play,” said Remondet. “But I think it’s very good for our girls’ confidence to be able to come out and win a game like this.”

The Comets return to action on Thursday as it hosts Country Day at 6 p.m.

The Cajuns and the Comets have traditionally played very close, competitive games over the years, and Remondet says she expects nothing different this time around.

“I’m ready for another good, hard fought game,” she said.
