Some people never cease to amaze me, especially in my own family. This Saturday, my granddaughter, Brittany Watson Smith, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, with Magna Cum Laude honors, from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana.
I realize that becoming a nurse takes a lot of studying and hard work, but for Brittany to choose that profession is what surprised me. As a young girl, and even in high school, every time she got a shot, she fainted. My wife and I witnessed many of these experiences. In fact, it almost became a joke. (Who would stand behind Brittany when she got her shot?)
I thought as she entered college that surely she would change her major. How could Brittany, who fainted every time she got an injection, be serious about becoming a nurse and having to give an injection?
For the last year, she’s been a nurse technician at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge. She has a desire to work with children and will be employed at this hospital.
Will Brittany be a good nurse? I have no doubt that she will.
She is the daughter of Michael Watson and my daughter, Ann, and is married to Justin Smith of Baton Rouge. They now reside in Gonzales, Louisiana.
This weekend will be a joyous occasion for our family and the Watson’s. I’m sure Jim and Peggy are just as proud of Brittany as we are. We will all be celebrating, with Brittany, the completion of four years of dedication and hard work.
I thought it only fair to add that Brittany, now, has no problem getting an injection, and, also, has no problem giving one. She truly has accomplished a lot!
