St. Charles Coach Rick Woodroof referred to his team’s 2-0 victory over H.L. Bourgeois three games ago as somewhat of an ugly win.
But Woodroof had no such complaints with his team’s 2-0 home victory over Mandeville last Friday. And Thursday’s 3-0 win over St. Martin’s drew a rave review.
“This was our best game of the season,” said Woodroof. “We played great, were able to work on things and execute.”
Peter Lambert-Oswald, John Abbate and Nick Woodroof each scored goals to propel the Comets (6-3) to the win over St. Martin’s (0-6-1).
St. Charles led the game 1-0 at halftime.
The win also represented the third straight shutout for the St. Charles defense.
“Over the course of this season, our defense has played really well,” said Woodroof. “Our back line communicates really well and is very fast and physical. They play defense like it’s supposed to be played.”
Last Friday’s win over Mandeville was a stark improvement from the showing the team made against Bourgeois earlier in the week, Woodroof said.
“It was a much better performance, more organized,” Woodroof said. “We worked on our weaknesses from that game in practice and it paid off. It was a very positive effort.”
Lambert-Oswald and Chris Ilski each scored a goal in the win for the Comets.
Woodroof credited the team with controlling the ball against the Skippers (2-3-2) more than it did against Bourgeois on Tuesday.
“We played a more possessive game,” said Woodroof. “We used our wings to send the ball in. We defended a lot better.”
Now, the Comets turn their attention to Rummel (7-1-1), who the team will host today at 3 p.m.
It may be the Comets’ most stern test so far this season, says Woodroof.
“They’re always a top ten team in Division I,” said Woodroof. “It’s going to be a very tough game, a good test. But that’s how we like them, that’s what we try to schedule.”
